Medusa
'There are different ancient accounts of Medusa's origins. In the early Greek tradition recorded by Hesiod, she was born a Gorgon, the daughter of the sea deities Phorcys and Ceto. She wasn't originally described as an ordinary human woman who was transformed into a monster.

A later, particularly famous version comes from the Roman poet Ovid.
In Ovid's account:
Medusa was once a beautiful young woman, admired for her appearance and especially her hair.
The sea god Poseidon sexually assaulted her in Athena's temple.
Athena punished Medusa by transforming her hair into snakes and making her face so terrifying that anyone who looked at her would turn to stone.'
